'Spoil Shelter', Nantlle, North Wales

Medium: dyed waxed canvas, steel hooks, slate waste

'Spoil Shelter' is a place to dream of underground vibrations and surface reparations. From a body of work exploring my connection to sites in Wales, including slate quarry sites. Surrounded by the shifting abundance of slate remnants in Mid Wales where I grew up, I have been reusing waste fragments lifted from the strata of the land, exploring the process of stitching together what has been split asunder. A kind of reverse extraction is at play in this process.

Traditionally used in permanent housing, here it creates a sheltering layer for temporary dwelling. The slate facets and their palette of colours catch the light with a dull sheen. Steel wire and slate hooks are used to attach the pieces.
