Will There Be Monuments? is a short video piece made in 2012. The footage was filmed during an ‘Appropriate Building Materials’ workshop at ‘The Centre for Alternative Technology’. The course is led by Maurice Mitchell who is ‘Professor of Architecture of Rapid Change and Scarce Materials’ at London Metropolitan University. The video uses static viewpoints to centre attention on two primitive-looking constructions on the workshop site, imposing a subtly different, dreamlike interpretation of the actions and words of the workshop participants. In looking ahead and preparing for times of material scarcity the participants were turning back to traditional building materials and methods, but these techniques can never be regarded with the same innocence now we hold within our consciousness the knowledge of modernity and technology.
